Recently I saw a comment on an instagram blog post stating that doula’s are just trying to intrude on the work of midwifes. So I just wanted to make clear again why that is not only not true, it is also offensive to the years of medical studies midwives go through. Clearly many people don’t understand the difference in our roles.
Midwives and doulas have been working together since the dawn of time, and we both play important side roles, the mother being the main character in the story of her labor and birth. I think this is always the most important thing to remark; the wellbeing of the mother is the priority, and it should be to everyone who has the privilege to witness and be present at this special time. No one other than the mother delivers the baby.
From ancient times to today, doulas and midwives have worked together to provide holistic care during childbirth. Their collaboration, rooted in the traditions of female-centered support, has always been essential in ensuring safe and empowering births.
Ancient Roots
In ancient cultures, childbirth was a communal event. Midwives, knowledgeable in traditional remedies and birthing techniques, managed the medical aspects of birth. Alongside them were other women—early doulas—who provided emotional and physical support, helping the mother stay calm and empowered. These women offered comfort, encouragement, and practical help, ensuring a balanced and holistic birth experience. This ancient collaboration laid the foundation for the modern partnership between midwives and doulas.
Modern Collaboration
Today, doulas and midwives continue to work closely together in both home and hospital births. In home births, midwives focus on the medical aspects, while doulas provide continuous emotional support, pain management, and comfort, creating a balanced birthing environment.
In hospitals, midwives may work independently or within a team, managing clinical care. Doulas complement this by advocating for the mother’s birth plan, offering reassurance, and helping with non-medical aspects like breathing techniques and positioning. Together, they ensure a holistic approach to childbirth, combining expert care with emotional support for better outcomes.
“Doulas provide the emotional and physical support that complements the clinical care provided by midwives. Their collaboration enhances the overall birth experience and empowers women in their birthing journey.”

Better Together
Research shows that when doulas and midwives work together, birth outcomes improve, with shorter labors, fewer interventions, and higher satisfaction. Their timeless collaboration ensures that every woman feels supported and empowered during this life-changing event.
I myself can definitely say that both were essential for my wellbeing during my labors and births of children.
