The mother is always completely within her right to decide where and how her labour takes place. As a doula, I am super excited to start accompanying the dilation process at home. For women who decide to give birth at home or in the hospital. In the latter case, waiting until the last moment before going to the joint venture has several benefits. Mainly avoiding the risk of several unnecessary interventions.

To be able to be in the comfort of your own home, feeling comfortable and protected, in a familiar, intimate space and surrounded by people who are there only to provide you with love and support. My job as a doula is exactly about this. Being there to support, give love, and remind the mother of her innate, mammalian inner power. Let her know that she doesn’t need any help to give birth, just a few reminders (with love and respect) of her own strength, and a few environmental touches to boost natural oxytocin flow. Only when she is transitioning into active labor, and/or when the mother feels the need, will she begin to consider the trip to the hospital for the birth of her baby.

Although I would love to support deliveries from start to finish, with all the sincerity in the world I confess that I still don’t have time. As a mother of a beautiful little girl, who is still nursing, I still can’t be away that long. I am very happy to be able to start offering this accompaniment in the dilation phase.

I would stay on call from week 37 to 42, and my availability during the dilation would be 8 hours.
